Bird's-eye view of a glacier's soul

Garrett Fisher takes stunning one-handed shots of glaciers from his 1949 Piper PA11 plane inherited from his grandfather.

A childhood fascination for snow-capped peaks, a move to the American West, melting glaciers in the Rockies, then a move to Europe with his beloved plane, brought this American adventurer to Château d'Oex and the Saanenland in 2018. His take on the current situation: "Precipitation patterns will become more stagnant, with more prolonged periods of heavy rainfall and drought. Rainfall will progressively replace snowfall in winter. Every glacier viewable from prime properties in the Saanenland will be among the first to melt in the Bernese Alps".

In 2021, Garrett decided to photograph as many of the earth's non-polar glaciers as possible before they melt. "The Alps are not enough. The mission for the non-profit Global Glacier Initiative (www.globalglacierinitiative.org) I have now set up is to photograph glaciers in relatable ways for those who cannot visit them and future generations who will never view what we have now. Social media has abundant images taken from the ground, and science offers a wealth of technical data. What I like to do is see an entire glacier close enough to peer into its soul, and share an unforgettable view." And soon a stirring memory…
