But also challenges, lessons to be learnt?
My shareholders and I had zero experience in hospitality; we learned the trade organically. Fortunately we weren’t trying to send people to Mars so any mistakes we made didn’t result in disaster. When we opened, prioritising sustainability was seen as ludicrous. Today we are a case study in this. And we place huge importance on our team’s health and happiness, while other establishments in our category put guests first and the team’s wellbeing as an afterthought.
What makes The Alpina Gstaad special?
The people, the location. We have fascinating guests and I love hanging out on the terrace, meeting new people who go on to become firm friends. It would not be the same without our incredible team’s dedication to our guests and each other. Of course, the Saanenland is a very special destination, from idyllic vistas to outdoor activities and incredible produce, so it’s a magical place for hosting.
Have the hotel’s values changed?
No, and I think that’s part of what makes it so successful. We worked hard to create an identity shaped by our values. Changing those would mean changing everything we are known for.
New milestones to be targeted?
We are constantly evolving to ensure we remain the innovative, luxury “home away from home” that our guests have come to expect.
Where do you want The Alpina Gstaad to be in 2032?
Still in Gstaad, of course, but also in the metaverse, for everyone to enjoy.
