In World War II, it briefly became a children's home, then a home for refugees from all over the world for many years. In 1990, it became a foundation offering homes and jobs for people with disabilities. In 2018, the old hotel was replaced by a larger new building to provide 42 living units. The work area has since been renovated and employment possibilities for local people have also grown.
Since its origins, Alpenruhe has brought people together with the most diverse backgrounds from the most diverse parts of the world. "We value these cultural and linguistic exchanges, seeing ourselves as a place where people with diverse backgrounds can spend carefree, positive hours," says Director Markus Kindler. "Alpenruhe often produces items for The Alpina Gstaad and, even before the renovation, it was a popular meeting-place with its playground, little zoo and cafeteria for families and The Alpina Gstaad guests. It must continue as such in the future: a place where people with or without disabilities feel comfortable." Plans for this experience are now ready, though financial support is needed from the local population, guests, institutions… so that work can restart in the spring and be completed in 2022.
Donations to help Alpenruhe rebuild the playground and little zoo should be sent to: CH41 0634 2314 6577 9511 5.
