The Alpina Gstaad welcomes its guests in 56 enchanting rooms in the upper part of Gstaad – Oberbort, where its ancestor the Grand Hotel Alpina once stood. The first hotel in the region, built in 1907, was open during the summer and winter seasons, until its heyday came to an end in the late 1980s.
Marcel Bach, born in Gstaad, and Jean-Claude Mimran, who had visited the village many times over the years, acquired the hotel and initiated construction plans. The demolition of the ageing building was intended to set the stage for a new era. When it was finally demolished in 1995, no one suspected that it would take thirteen years before construction of the new hotel would begin.
Protests from the residents arose during the demolition and continued long after. Then, in 2008, after multiple alterations, the project was finally approved and construction work began. For five years, the large site in Oberbort bustled with activity. A local architect’s office was entrusted with the planning, and many local craftsmen were involved in the project.
In addition to the hotel, several residences were also integrated into the new establishment. Its unique design, partly influenced by local building regulations, soon became a landmark in Gstaad. In December 2012, The Alpina Gstaad launched with a legendary gala, becoming the first luxury hotel to open its doors in Saanenland in 100 years. Its refined architecture using local materials, alongside its outstanding elegance and sophistication have attracted discerning visitors from around the world, many of whom remain loyal guests to this day.
