Swiss Jewellery: when tradition meets sustainability

Sustainability awareness continues to grow with an increasing number of brands focusing on ethical jewellery.

Real jewellery can in fact be naturally sustainable, precious metals and gemstones can be recycled, and even if the design goes out of style, the materials retain their value and can be reused. However, many manufacturers and customers are paying closer attention to the working conditions under which the materials are extracted and the environmental impact of this process.

But it is now possible to buy jewellery made from responsibly mined gold, also known as fairmined gold, and diamonds and coloured gemstones also increasingly come with Fairtrade certificates or proof of origin. In the meantime, fairly produced materials are no longer used exclusively by smaller bespoke designers, as growing demand has led larger brands to evolve – like these three Swiss brands that are committed to producing sustainable jewellery:

Chopard

Historic Swiss company Chopard is committed to fairly produced jewellery. In 2018 Caroline and Karl-Friedrich Scheufele announced that going forward, Chopard would only use fairmined gold, a step taken by no other company of this size. This was consistent with the direction being taken at Chopard - back in 2013 their Green Carpet Collection used only fairly produced gold and certified diamonds and emeralds.

Signum Fair Jewels

Family business Signum Fair Jewels, based in Buchs, creates classic jewellery with certified precious metals and gemstones, and is particularly renowned for fairly produced wedding rings. Transparency is prioritised throughout the production process and the company supports the Casa Hogar initiative in Colombia, helping to combat pollution in the southwest of the country, a region heavily polluted with mercury from gold mining.

Leni Adam

Leni Adam jewellery only uses recycled precious metals bearing the Oekogold label. For its Frieda series the jeweller works with quartz from the Swiss mountains to emphasise our connection to nature. All pieces are made in Leni’s goldsmith studio in Olten.
