After two years of travel restrictions, our in-house wine connoisseurs were finally able to travel to Bordeaux to take part in the annual Bordeaux En Primeur. Every year, this event attracts thousands of merchants, critics, and journalists from all over the world to this renowned wine-growing region, and this year the great châteaux opened their doors from April 24th to 28th for the 2022 vintage tasting.
Our team, consisting of our Director of Restaurants Pierfranco Lavra and sommelier Andrea Ferrari, decided to visit the Médoc, the well-known wine-growing region located on the left bank of the Garonne and the Gironde estuary, where Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant grape variety. They also made their way to the right bank and visited the small Pomerol and Saint-Émilion vineyards, the latter cultivating mostly Merlot. The tour ended in Pessac-Léognan and Graves, which lies just south of Bordeaux and produces both red and white wines.
In total, our wine experts assessed over 400 wines. Pierfranco Lavra reported that 2022 was quite an “unforgiving” vintage, so winemakers who did not give the vines enough love and attention in difficult weather conditions could only harvest dry, overripe fruit. However, through conversations with the winemakers on site, our team was able to understand the philosophy of the various châteaux and have put together an exclusive selection of Bordeaux wines for our guests; Château de Pez turned out to be one of the biggest surprises for our sommeliers, who look forward to delighting our guests with their esteemed selection on our wine list from 2024 onwards.
